This summer I discovered and fell in love with the book Teach Like A Pirate by Dave Burgess.
I lead a very informal book study this summer using a private Facebook group. Weekly we looked at the meaning of being PIRATE.
Part III Building a Better Pirate
We all have a little pirate in us...whether we know it or not.
In the final section of his book, Burgess outlines ways we can become better.
A lot of things stuck out to me in this section...hence the reason for a blog post and not my normal Facebook question post.
Here are a few of my favorite things that Burgess writes:
Page 145- "By being great, you are raising the bar and providing a model for others to emulate."
Page 146- "Ultimately, the world becomes a better place because of your greatness. Therefore, in our profession, striving for greatness is the ultimate act of unselfishness! We are in a service profession, and there is nothing egotistical or selfish about wanting the provide world-class service to our clients."
Page 147: "Unless you find something big to care about, you won't make it."
(I could write an entire post on this one sentence)
Page 159: "You can either talk about all the great things you are going to do or you can actually do them. There is no in between."
(Momma always said there is a difference in talking the talk and walking the walk.)
Page 169: "All pirates travel with a crew: you can't sail, navigate, and fight battles all on your own."
My challenge to you as we begin a new year----Find something BIG to care about. Be GREAT. Don't settle for in between. Find a crew...people who will encourage you and your Greatness. (include me in your crew)
AAAARRGH you ready to set sail and be great?!??!

The beginning...not the end
Instead of counting down the days until June 5 I am looking ahead.
To the future of my STEM classroom. To the incredible opportunity of Project Lead the Way training next week. To teaching andhopefully inspiring other educators this summer. To finishing my book study Teach Like A Pirate.
I hope that this blog will become a place for me to share my journey. And the journey of my classroom and my kiddos.
Stay tuned....
